Online Church Services- Church of the Highlands

Church of the Highlands

Many churches around the country offer live church services via the internet.  We will focus on as many as we can over time.  Today, we’d like to point you to Church of the Highlands’ live services.

Church of the Highlands is a fast-growing, life-giving church based in Birmingham, Alabama.  Its Senior Pastor is Chris Hodges.  In 2008, Church of the Highlands was the fastest growing church in the country.  In 2009, the church is still growing and has over 10,000 in attendance each weekend.  It has five (5) campuses located around the Birmingham metropolitan area and one in Auburn, AL, and another in Tuscaloosa, AL.

Highlands’ live services can be found here.  If you click through during a live event, you will bring up their streaming feed which includes worship and preaching.  If you arrive before a service begins, you’ll be informed by a count-down clock of the time the next service is scheduled. A nice feature of the page is Highland’s link to message archives.  If you do arrive before a service, you can still watch past messages by clicking that link.  When you’re there, you can download a Worship Guide and the day’s Message Notes.  Links on the bottom of the page offer you a chance to learn more about the church, give online, and fill out a connection card.

If you’re ever in the area, you should definitely check out live services at either Church of the Highlands’ main campus or one of its satellites.  If a trip to Alabama isn’t in your near future, you can attend a great service at a great church right from the comfort of your own computer screen.

Online Bibles

online bibleThere’s this verse in the Bible you know is there.  You want to find it.  You don’t have Bible software.  You don’t have a concordance, or you’re somewhere your concordance is not. There’s no need to fret.  There many free online Bible sites that allow you do word searches.  Some even have some extra juice when it comes to features.  We will list a few that you should bookmark.

YouVersion: We’ve already referred to YouVersion a few times because of their smartphone Bible App.  YouVersion allows you to search multiple versions and translations; keep an online journal; engage in community; upload/download videos; see the thoughts and ideas of others; create your own account; follow a reading plan; and more.

BibleGateway: This online Bible site allows you to search multiple translations; search the Bible by topic, follow a reading plan; check commentaries; download the Bible in ebook form; and use other study tools like Bible Dictionaries; and more.

StudyLight: StudyLight.org allows you to search multiple translations; consult concordances and other study tools; check commentaries; read multiple versions in parallel; participate in forums; enjoy humorous cartoons; and more.

While there are other similar sites (some of which we will likely add later), these are our favorites.  Enjoy and may your Bible reading and study shift into overdrive.

YouVersion Bible App in Top 10 on Blackberry App World

top-tenWe don’t make the news, we just report it. A few days ago we pointed you to the LifeChurch.tv Bible app for iPhone, Blackberry and Android. The Bible App points to LifeChurch.tv’s online Bible platform call YouVersion. You can check it out at www.youversion.com.

The Bible App was recently updated, and only two days after 2.0.5 was released to make the Blackberry App compatible with the Blackberry Storm and Storm2. It took only two days for the App to break into the top 10 on Blackberry App World.

While exciting for the church, I’m sure you’d agree that the big win is the win overall. The Bible is being distributed globally and the trend for installs are coming in at over 350,000 per month. Per Month!

That’s a wholelota Bible reading. We’re proud of those guys at LifeChurch.tv. Congrats to their Digerati Team! Big win for us all!

iPhone Bible App

iphonesIf you have an iPhone, surely you spend some time in the Apps Store.  You probably have your device loaded with all kinds of cool little apps that help you through your day.  How about one that will help you with your devotional life?

LifeChurch.tv has designed an app that gives you access to the Bible right from your iPhone.  Here are some of the Bible App for iPhone’s features:

  • 40 different translations in 22 languages (including Spanish, German, French, Chinese, and more)
  • The One-Year Reading Plan provides daily selections to keep you on track when you’re on the go.
  • Search the entire Bible for a word, phrase, or verse, and get your results in seconds.
  • Jump to a verse quickly by typing the reference in the search box
  • Learn from others by checking out recent contributions. Just tap the number next to the verse.
  • Compatible with iPhone and iPod Touch, requires 2.0 update.

The last time we heard, the Bible app from LifeChurch.tv  had logged a couple million minutes of Bible reading. In fact, something interesting happened at the last Hillsong Australia Conference. When Joel Osteen did his “This is my Bible…”, people all over the auditorium lifted up their phones. (The app is also available for Blackberry and Android devices).  That’s not to say they were all using this app, but it’s likely that many or even most were. There is no denying that the web is being leveraged for Christian engagement in community and devotion.

Don’t miss your chance to have the Bible with you everywhere you go.  Download this app today.  You can get it from iTunes here.

How He Loves Us – Kim Walker / Jesus Culture

Sometimes songs are simple, catchy and fun to sing.  Sometimes they are deeply meaningful.  Not to say that they can’t be both.  Sometimes songs are incredibly poetic.  We are amazed when the lyrics are so vivid that pictures explode in our minds.  The song we are featuring today is one of those. How He Love Us by Kim Walker / Jesus Culture paints the closest picture of the vastness of God’s love for us in some of the best visual words we’ve ever heard- from a single tree in a hurricane to a drowning person in an ocean of grace.

It may not strike you the first time you hear it because the melody of the verses is a little complicated. In contrast, the chorus is very simple and easy to sing.  When you listen to the song from the embedded YouTube we’ve posted below, it would serve you well you read along with the lyrics.  If you miss the words, you’ll likely miss the touch.

How He Loves Us :
He is jealous for me
Loves like a hurricane
I am a tree bending beneath the weight of His wind and mercy.
When all of a sudden I am unaware of these afflictions eclipsed by glory
I realize just how beautiful You are and how great Your affections are for me.

And Oh how He loves us so
Oh How He loves us
How He loves us so.

We are His portion and He is our prize
Drawn to redemption by the grace in His eyes.
If grace is an ocean we’re all sinking.
So heaven meets earth like a sloppy wet kiss
And my heart turns violently inside of my chest.
I don’t have time to maintain these regrets when I think about
The way…

Yeah He loves us
Oh how He loves us
Oh how He loves us
Oh how He loves
